The number of skirts Champa bought is two less than twice the pants, and four less than four times the pants. Find both numbers.

Solution

Let x be pants and y be skirts.

y=2x−2,y=4x−4y=2x-2,\qquad y=4x-4

Plot (0, −2), (2, 2) and (0, −4), (1, 0).

The intersection (1, 0) satisfies both statements.
